This is the second part of my “Girl’s Week” adventures at my sister’s house. If you missed yesterday’s post, click HERE. The first day of our Girl’s Week, we ate lunch at a place called Hu-Hot…sort of a Mongolian Grill where your food is cooked on a big round grill right in front of you. You fill a bowl up with what you want stir-fried and they dump it out and cook it for you. It’s fun to watch every time you go there. We actually ate there the first day and had so much fun, we decided on our last day to eat there again… They are mostly in the mid/central United States, but if you ever see one, it’s worth the trip to stop there.
Deb also did some cooking for us and I’m going to share two of the recipes she made for us… One was a pumpkin pie cheesecake that will knock your socks off. I think I seriously could have eaten the whole pie…myself! It would be a great recipe for your Thanksgiving dinners so I’ll be sure and get it posted in the next few days.
Linda mentioned in her post that my brother must be the musical one of the family… he plays the guitar and my sister, Deb, is incredible at playing the piano. I could listen to her all day…seriously she is one fantastic player and it was fun for her to play oldies and have us try to guess what song it was. My mom enjoyed that very much. One of these days when I figure out how to post a video on here, I’m going to have a clip of Deb playing so you can “hear what I mean!”
After we went to the Tea Room we hit the Antique shops in the town and even a few more in some other little burgs…We mostly did “window” shopping, but it was still fun… in one of the antique malls, we found a booth that was vintage lamps and lighting… it was amazing to see all the pretty lights to choose from. Deb was looking for a new dining room light and we did our part to help her find one…but she didn’t buy one… just dreamed of the possibilities…
In the same mall, I snapped a picture of these dolls dressed in some vintage looking dresses…
I also saw a piece that would make a great island for my kitchen… it was pretty neat looking…
On our way home, my sister said, “Jeanne, there’s a Hancock’s just up ahead… do you want to stop there?” Uh….uh….uh…(as I’m thinking of my “spending freeze post”… more uh’s and finally I just blurted out, “SURE!” So she whipped into the parking lot and let me run in…
I was good… pretty good at least… I only bought 4 one yard pieces of fabric. I hadn’t seen these prints so I indulged…
I might as well show you here, but my sister found this little girls smocked corduroy jumper and blouse in PA and bought it for me. The fabric is a very pretty purple and it’s handmade. I thought I could repurpose it for Molly some day. It’s very sweet and in great condition…
At one of the antique shops I saw this sign and had to take a picture of it… I thought you all would get a kick out of it… I sure did…
On Tuesday we went to a HUGE book sale! It was in two rooms and there was no way my puny little camera could capture just how large the room was but let me just tell you, it was HUGE! The books were sorted by categories and it was very fun to search for books that you thought you might like to read. I picked up 4 but nothing about sewing… but let me tell you they had plenty in the craft and sewing categories. I did find a cookbook using Pressure Cookers and was excited about it…
One of the days we went for a walk and I snapped this picture of a cockscomb that was probably the prettiest one I had ever seen…
Another day we went to see some dear friends of our family… he is almost 88 and she is 85. We had a wonderful visit with them. She had her childhood dolls sitting in a rocking chair and I asked if I could take off the plastic cover and take a picture of them. I think she said she got the one on the left in the 1940’s. The other ones were her daughters dolls and the rocking chair was her daughters too.
We mostly visited the last day and shared memories…the stories you try to remember on your own but need help with sisters to get all the facts straight. It was such a fun week…
When I got home, I had a package waiting for me from Kathie, one of my readers. She sent me these 5 sweet hankies to use however I wanted. I think they are very pretty and will add them to my collection.
While I was away, my hubby also put up new mini blinds in my sewing room. My roller shades were falling apart and now it’s wonderful… Thanks honey! I love them…
Maybe my new blinds will make me sew faster…I’m certainly going to need all the help I can get to get my Christmas doll dresses made…
Well, I hope you’ve enjoyed all the pictures I shared from our Girl’s Week… Thanks for all your sweet comments too…it’s always fun for me to read what everyone’s thinking as I share my life with you…
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
Wowee, Jeanne, another chock full blog of your wonderful “girl’s week”! I really do love those pictures of the antique shops, the lighting and island are fabulous! And you found that in Ozark, MO? Like I said previously, we just get gas there on the way to Branson, and they sure don’t look like a gas station! Well, that’s the way it goes when you travel with a hubby!!
That corduroy material from the jumper is simply adorable, and yes, Molly would look great in that! I wonder if you could also somehow use the smocking part, but it may be too big for a doll I guess.
What a thrill to see your friend’s dolls sitting there while visiting! And those hankies! Do you notice that the ones with the children playing in the winter, have clothes on like Maryellen’s skating outfit?
Thank you for sharing with us your week, and it looks like you will be having fun in your newly “redecorated” sewing room getting all the dolls Christmas outfits made!
HI Linda,
The only thing better than pictures taken in an antique shop is going to it yourself!!! You’ll have to scout out Ozark the next time you and your hubby go through. There are some great little shops there…
I’m hoping to be able to use the smocking part of the dress for a dress for Molly. I think I can…
Several ladies have told me about the hankie with the skating outfit like Maryellen’s. I’ll have to check that out myself.
New blinds certainly do help with the looks of my sewing room… now if they’ll just help me sew faster… :o)
Thanks Linda,
Blessings, Jeanne
How wonderful of you to share your family week with us. I, too, wish we were all blessed with the close family ties that you have. What a great week! I am keeping these two Blogs in a special file to read over and over. It’s great to put a face to your name and those of your family. What a talented family you are! Your mother must be so proud of all of you.
Thanks again for taking the time to share all of the wonderful things you did together. You are all truly blessed. I second all of the lovely compliments of your many followers and enjoy every Blog. You are an inspiration!
HI Susette,
It does break my heart sometimes to hear of families that aren’t close… I never want to forget that no everyone has what we have. I do cherish the times we get together.
I think my mom is proud of her family and we love her back…
Thanks Susette, for your kind comments to me…
Blessings, Jeanne
My favorites: the kitchen island, the lighting store, and that wonderful huge book sale. I’m looking forward to the pumpkin pie recipe.
Those mini-blinds are going to be terrific for you — you can see out but not be blinded by the sun. Good things kept happening for you at home while good things were happening to you on your trip. Linda’s right that the children playing handkerchief is great inspiration for some Mary Ellen outfits, and the others are lovely for your collection or for inspiration for other doll dresses.
Altogether October has been a splendid Jeanne Marie month.
HI Marilyn,
You got my favorites just about right too… the island I’d take in a heartbeat… the lights in the one booth were incredible, and the books were a little overwhelming. On the last day, it was all the books you could fit into a paper bag for $5.00!
Thanks so much for your sweet compliments Marilyn,
It’s a joy having you as a subscriber…and friend…
Blessings, Jeanne
Jeanne, I love seeing you with your family so sweet. I love browsing in antique stores too. The vintage dolls your friend has are sweet..my grandmother had a composition doll from the forties too. I never knew her she passes away before I was born, but my sister said she remembers her getting that doll, guess that is where I get my doll collecting in my later years. ha! Also, I love the blue snowflake fabric you purchased at Hancock’s.
HI Regina,
I’m glad you enjoyed my week of fun as I did! It was fun to share it all with everyone. Maybe loving dolls is “hereditary!”
I will have to find the perfect doll for the snowflake fabric… I loved it too!
Thanks Regina,
Blessings, Jeanne
Wow!!! What a fun-filled busy week you had, Jeanne! I don’t know what to comment on first. Okay, that sign… too funny, I pinned it onto my “Funnies” board. https://www.pinterest.com/cjsr1961/funnies/
We don’t have Hancock’s Fabric here; in the 90s we had Minnesota Fabrics which always had Hancocks on the shopping bag. You have the best family to “let” you go into a fabric store while they wait. That little girls corduroy dress is adorable!!! Why isn’t fabric like this available to purchase??? I have the cutest Gymboree overalls from my daughter. (Of course, I cannot cut them up.) They are super fine wale corduroy, light pink, with tiny rosebuds. Hopefully, I’ll have a granddaughter who will wear them… Love the dolls photo, the cockscomb (I’ve never seen that growing here), your new hankies, the book store, antique lighting, and the island. I can tell your hubby missed you too… <3
Thanks for sharing your photos with us; I enjoyed them! Have a great Sunday, Jeanne!
HI Cindy,
I thought that sign was just too cute to not take a picture of. It was worded just perfectly!!
I’m glad you enjoyed all my random pictures in this post. I should have put my hand down and taken a picture of it by the Cockscomb… it was probably 10″ across… and so velvety…
You would love to have one I’m sure…
Blessings, Jeanne
Jeanne, first off. Thank you for sharing your family adventures with us. Your descriptive writing makes me feel as if I was there, on the shopping trip with you, your sisters and your mother. What a happy feeling ! You are blessed to have such a close and loving relationship with your family. Each one is so talented and creative but I have to give my total honor and respect to your mother who raised all of you alone when your father passed away at a young age. Again, thank you for sharing!!
HI Jeannie,
It was my pleasure to share with everyone what I did and with whom. We had a very fun week and it was such a blessing to be with my whole family at the same time. Maybe the hubby’s should get together and do the same thing… tools, eating, Bass Pro shop, eating, etc.
My mom deserves a medal for all she’s been through. We tried to include her in what all we did. I’m pretty sure she had a good time and will be ready for it again next year.
Thanks Jeannie,
Blessings, Jeanne
Love that you took us along with you as you and your family made memories for the future. A wonderful week!
Thank you Jan,
I’m so glad you enjoyed the week just like I did!
Blessings, Jeanne
Love the Hancocks dark royal blue fabric. I can just picture something regal.
Thanks for sharing your fun photos and the travel log. It’s like we had a trip too!
Thanks Joy,
I’m glad you enjoyed my Girl’s Week trip as much as I did!
The blue is a very pretty fabric… regal is a good word to describe it.
Blessings, Jeanne
