Some days just don’t go like you planned them…

Well, my day didn’t go exactly as I had planned. I worked at the Food Pantry and that was wonderful. I got some groceries and that was fine. I got a box in the mail and that was fine… (I’ll share what I got later.)I was supposed to start a new Blogging class tonight at a nearby Junior College and have been waiting for it to start for almost 2 months. I was so excited!!! It was 2 hours until I was supposed to leave for class…

Then my phone rang…I was walking to get it, just like any other time and something happened… my shoe slipped sideways and my foot twisted, I heard a snap, I landed on the floor, skinned both knees and both hands, said “Oh, Oh, Oh” at least 50 times I’m sure, all while Reuben did his best to try and comfort me. I hit the floor so hard, unbelievably, my fitbit Charge Activity Tracker snapped off my wrist and the glasses I had hooked in my shirt went flying into the kitchen. I knew I had hurt the outside part of my right foot and it started throbbing immediately. It took forever…well, at least 5 minutes, to crawl on my hands and knees to the dining room table and pull myself up into a chair. After about 50 more “Oh’s” I looked at my phone and saw it was my daughter Rebecca who had tried to call me. Somehow I called her back and she said, “I need some counsel…” I butted in and said, “I need some help…” I was hurting so bad she told me what to do. She said, “Call dad and I’ll make arrangements for one of the doctors to see you as soon as you can get here.” (She cleans medical buildings for a clinic. ) So I did, and my hubby came home, helped me to the car, we went to the clinic…the doctor, said, “Yep, it’s swelling up, and something doesn’t look right…you need an x-ray.” So we went to the hospital and got it x-rayed. I won’t know anything till tomorrow, but she gave me a Rx for some “drugs” and I’m heading to bed… I’m sorry I didn’t get your comments answered, but I did read them all while I was waiting in the car as my hubby picked up my Rx. Thank you all SO much.

I’m really hoping it’s not broken or fractured… I was supposed to help do the decorating for a hayride and “Taste of America” picnic for our church this Saturday… I guess I might be in the role of Supervisor….a sitting down Supervisor :o(

I can’t bend my right foot, my accelerator foot for my sewing machine, :o), so I’ll have to be creative and come up with something else in the meantime.

Sorry, but no pictures today…
Nightie Night,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Oh, poor you, Jeanne! I had a feeling something happened when you didn’t comment on any of the responses yesterday. You know, that same thing happened to me a couple of years ago when I slipped and fell on a step in the backyard. It turned out that I tore a tendon and it was very painful. I had to wear a boot for awhile, which drove me crazy, and it finally healed, but I almost did have surgery on it, because it was a good sized tear. I had it x-rayed, but nothing showed up until I had an MRI. Take care, and rest! It will be OK eventually, but I do understand how the pain is.
    Now heading to Denver!

    1. HI Linda,
Well, there’s certainly NO reason why I can’t get to all the comments today.. nothing but sitting around…although I did just manage to cut up a small watermelon…
This certainly puts a damper on my plans for the next few weeks, but somehow I’ll manage…just like you did with your hurt foot. I’ve heard torn tendons are the worst pains ever!
I will rest and who knows what I’ll get done in a “sitting” position…
Have fun on your trip Linda… enjoy yourself!
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. HI Linda Marie….
I couldn’t agree with you more!!!! ME TOO!!! This too shall pass!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Oh, Jeanne! I’m so sorry and can’t believe this happened to you. I hope you get the best care in the world as these kind of injuries are miserable, need an accurate diagnosis and can take a long time to heal. I’m sure you’ll give it time to heal but will find a way to sew before long. Do be careful, though, of the painkillers I’m sure they will give you.

I truly believe you could teach a class in Blogging instead of being a student; your Blog is that great. I’m glad you got your wonderful trip in before this happened. Prayers for a speedy recovery for the kindest, most giving and gifted person whom I feel like I know as a friend through your Blog.

    1. HI Susette,
Thank you for your kind words and encouragement… I’m pretty active, so this is going to be a real trial for me to slow down… I will be careful of the “drugs” as I know they can be dangerous and addicting…
You know, that is a blessing… that I got to go on my Girl’s Week trip before this happened…
I would have really been bummed out if it had happened right before that trip.
Oh, Susette, there is a ton of stuff I’d still like to learn about blogging… I guess we’ll see what happens with the class.
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thanks so much Christine,
I hope you are right about the sprain… and I’m sure I’ll get lots of “sit down” time… not my favorite thing… but who knows what I might accomplish…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Oh, Jeanne, I am so sorry! I hope it is just swelling and nothing else is wrong. I will say prayers for you today and that you have a quick recovery.
    <3<3<3
    Sending you hugs too!

    1. HI Cindy,
Thanks so much for your kind words of encouragement…I can’t wait for the dr. to call and let me know what’s wrong… my foot is so swollen now, when I rest my foot on the floor, my toes don’t even touch the floor.
I guess I’ll see what I can accomplish sitting down.. . too bad I’m not a knitter!!! :o)
      Thank you Cindy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Oh my goodness Jeanne…bless your heart! Falls are just the worst thing and so scary. I pray you feel better today and the damage to your foot is minimal. I will add you to my daily prayers for speedy healing. Rest up, take good care of yourself and don’t feel sorry about not being able to post as usual here, but please do keep us informed of your situation.
    God Bless

    1. Marsha, I appreciate you adding me to your prayer list today… and maybe tomorrow too? From the looks of my foot, it make a little longer than what I’m hoping for…
I do have to sit and respond to comments…that’s one thing I CAN do….
I appreciate your kind words Marsha,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. oh, dear! ..well, at least you were smart enough to get it looked at right away. I walked on a broken ankle for a month before it was x-rayed – just thought it was sprained (again). By the time I had surgery, it had to be re-broken/set. Lesson learned. If your foot petal can be mounted on your sewing table – you can try making a knee petal out of it. There were some holes on the back of mine that allowed it to be ‘hung up’. I couldn’t push ‘down’ with my foot, but I could press my knee. (I even tried using my left foot, first – I’m ‘right footed’ as much as I am right handed, I guess. LOL!!) Keep it elevated with ice! Good luck!!

    1. HI Mary,
I’m not feeling like sewing so much today but maybe if it gets to feeling better but I’m not able to walk on it so much, I’ll try what you said about mounting the foot pedal to use it as a knee pedal… I’ve had one like that before, so it would be easy to get used to again.
Ouch… you walked on a broken ankle for a month??? Ouch again!
My hubby and Rebecca are taking pretty good care of me…
Thanks so much for your kind words to me, Mary,
      Blessings to you,
      Jeanne

Oh, my. Oh, no. Let us know what’s wrong when you can. It sounds as if enough prayers are coming your way to get you through this.
My friend Ricky always said it was such a great help to have friends in low places — Rebecca got attention for you right away — no waiting for you. What a wonderful, talented, and useful daughter.
We’ll wait for your news. Of course it’s going to be all right in the end. I just want it to be all right now.

    1. Thank you Marilyn,
I appreciate your concern and will keep you posted… Rebecca never gets flustered and usually stays calm and knows what to do in most situations… I was in no frame of mind to know what to do yesterday… but she did. Her boss got to meet her parents and we got to see her in action at work… it was sort of nice in a hurting sort of way…
I’m just thinking of the short term obligations I had… Discipleship with Sara’s mom tomorrow…I usually walk to the Library to meet her, a visitation and funeral this weekend, for my uncle, that just died 2 days ago, decorating for the hayride… Oh well, I won’t be able to do any of those…at least as of today I can’t…
I’ll have to focus on what I CAN do… I did just cut up 2 watermelons… YAY!
      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. OH, Jeanne, I am so sorry this happened to you. I sure hope you didn’t break it and that you are on the mend soon. I was great that Rebecca cleans there and could get you assistance very quickly.
I agree with MaryC about maybe mounting the sewing pedal on the side. My grandmothers machine was made that way and when my mom got a new machine years ago so had to get used to the foot pedal. At least you could sew then, if you felt up to it.
I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

    1. Thanks so much Laura,
I guess instead of “sewing” dresses right now, I’ll just be “picking out fabrics” for the dresses and getting what I need for each one in order… I could even cut out if I put all the stuff on the table and sat down while I did it. Now that’s sort of a plan, don’t you think?

Some people say a break is almost better than a sprain… I think it takes a long time for sprains to get completely healed up… I wish the dr. would call…
Thanks so much for your encouraging words, Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thank you Beth,
I appreciate your prayers… I’m trying to figure out how to be “normal” about this whole thing…walkers and crutches aren’t my thing….
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Yes, I am praying for your recovery and hope the news is good. Rest and take care of yourself. Let the world go on rotating and we will wait to hear from you when you are up to it. Bless you dear heart.

    1. Thanks so much Paula,
I do appreciate your prayers and your friendship so much! I’ll get this figured out and maybe get something done that I hadn’t thought of…
      Blessings to you Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. You get a big YIKES !! from me. So sorry this happened to you. Good that you could get to the phone to make a call and get the help you needed – quickly.
There is never a good time for such things to happen to us yet somehow we make it through and adjust. I hope the news you receive today is better than you might expect. Take the meds and take the advice of the doctor{s} and stay off that foot as needed.
    Saying some prayers for you!!

    1. Thank you Jeannie,
I will stay off the foot… I have no choice there as it’s awful to even let it touch the floor even lightly.
You’re right, there is never a good time for something like this, as there is never a good time for other things that happen to people either. This is peanuts compared to what some people go through… so I’ll try to find the good in it and go on…
Thank you for your prayers, Jeannie…I appreciate them…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. Jeanne, so sorry about your foot, I hope that it is not broken and that you will have a speedy recovery. Take care of yourself.

    Hugs and prayers!

    1. HI Regina,
I hope it’s not broken either… and I’m hoping for a speedy recovery too… Thank you very much for your kind thoughts to me… I have the best readers….
      Blessings, Jeanne

  11. I am sorry to hear this happened. I wonder how many times people are hurt by being startled by the phone. I hope nothing broke and that you feel better soon. Remember to elevate it above your heart to reduce swelling.

    1. Hi Kathleen,
I’ve been teasing Rebecca about being the one who called when I fell… I’m just glad my phone was in the same room I was in…if it had been in the bedroom or some other place, I would have had to crawl from room to room looking for it…not a pretty site!!!
Thanks Kathleen, and yes, I will keep it up…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  12. So glad Dr. Reuben was there to help. Know you will probably be very sore today. All those muscles you used to catch yourself will be aching. Hopefully, not broken, but if it is, this is a good time to get some well deserved rest. Wondering about those shoes? Maybe some lace ups in order? And the knee control is great. My mom’s Singer cabinet model has the knee. It was hard for me to learn to use the foot control.
    Thinking of you. Heal quickly.

    1. HI Joy,
Yes, Dr. Reuben was pretty curious as to why I was in the floor… fortunately he didn’t get on my hurt foot…. I am sort of sore today… I don’t know how I skinned the palm of my left hand and the top of it too… ???
Yes, lace up shoes might be in order from now now… they were slides that I had on…
I’m not sure how coordinated I’d be using my left foot for the foot control, but if need be, I’m sure my hubby can rig up something if my foot can’t be used for a while.
      Thanks so much Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

      1. yeah, ditch the slides. Love them, but when doing anything like walking in the yard, running for the phone, have to put on my tennies. Very stable. Come in lots of colors too. And great for walking on rocks near waterfalls :).

  13. Hi Jeanne,

I’m so sorry to hear about your poor foot. Sometimes we get slowed down whether we want to or not! Crossing my fingers it is not a serious injury!

    1. HI Jane,
You are me both are hoping it’s not serious… but if slowing down is what I need, then I guess I’ll slow down, but I’m sure I won’t like it… :o)
      Thanks so much Jane,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  14. Oh you poor thing! I can’t believe they couldn’t read the X-ray right there. I dropped a car seat on my foot a year ago, while I was sitting my grandson. We were alone and not only was I really hurting, he was so scared because Grandma couldn’t get up. I was finally able to call my son to come home and get to the doctor. It took 3 months to heal. I will pray for you.

    1. Hi Debi,
Well I just got a call from the doctor and she said it wasn’t broken or fractured but just a really bad sprain…so I am grateful for that. It’s always better when things are left as they are supposed to be…I have a lovely blue bruise about the size of a baseball on the side of my foot…
So I’m guessing you broke your foot? How that must have hurt to drop a car seat on your foot…. Ouchy!
Thanks for your sweet thoughts Debi,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  15. Sometimes, even if nothing is broken, they will cast and this makes things easier to accomplish. I did not have an automatic car and learned to drive with a cast. I am sure George will make it possible for you to machine sew again. I think many of us are waiting for your report. i donated all my slides after tripping. Not safe to wear. This will give you more time to plan and cut more outfits.

    1. Hi Jan, yes, as I’m sitting here on the couch, I am trying to think of what I can get accomplished in a seated position… So far I have gotten all my comments answered s…that’s a good start. I hope my hubby brings home his dinner cause I haven’t made anything… ?
      Thanks Jan,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  16. Oh ! You poor thing! That is just wrong on so many levels…. I’m sure you will have friends bring you some hot dishes…that’s the only negative about on line friends…sometimes you just have to BE THERE. Look at all your blog buddies…you know we’d be at the door with pots of soup etc!
Sometimes a break isn’t as bad as a sprain ….just hope what ever it is it heals fast!
( Your hubby is so handy…you can mount your machine foot pedal on the side by your knee and use it that way)
    (((HUGS)))

    1. Hi Kathie,
I just heard from the doctor and it’s just a really bad sprain. I know I should be thankful, but a few friends and relatives have texted me today with their sprain horror stories… I’ll try to keep smiling…
My blog readers have lifted my spirits today so much already today. You all truly are the BEST!!!!
Thanks so much for your kind words Kathie,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  17. Oh no, I hope nothing’s broken. Maybe it’s a sprain, although those can be as painful as a broken bone. I’ll say a prayer for you that it’s nothing serious and heals quickly.

    1. Thank you Carolyn,
I did find out this afternoon that it’s just a bad sprain… I am all for the quick healing!!!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  18. Charlotte Trayer

So sorry to hear about your fall and bad sprain! I am no stranger to falls, but I usually land on my knees, without the added “twist”. So far I’ve only cracked a rib in a fall–and I wasn’t even aware of it until about 3 weeks later, when my side hurt, and Laura took an x-ray!!

Anyway, be sure to ice it frequently, and keep it elevated when you can (will help keep swelling down). Maybe you could put your foot pedal on top of your sewing table, and “drive” it with your elbow. I’ve heard of people who have no or very limited use of their feet doing that. It might take a little practice but it can be done!

Prayers for a complete (and fast!) recovery.

    1. Thanks Charlotte,
Everyone has certainly tried to help me think of all kinds of ways to sew but putting the foot controller on top and using my elbow certainly wins the creative award!
I’ve also gotten lots of advice on how to take care of my foot, so I should do just fine!
      Thank you Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

      1. Charlotte Trayer

I’ve actually heard of someone–maybe on my sewing list–who has done that because she sews in a wheelchair. So, it’s not original to me, but apparently tried and used by someone else!
