The Start of a School Dress for Ten Ping…

You’d never know it but I’ve been working for hours on this little dress for Ten Ping…and this is all I have to show you…

CIMG2494

I have a ways to go, hemming it, finishing the back with snaps and buttons, maybe run a red strand of floss through the beading, a slip, a hat, a book bag, and maybe some shoes…

The reason it’s not any more done than it is, is we couldn’t decide how to make it… I wanted to do a school dress and Ten Ping wanted something dressy! She wanted polka dots and I wanted plaid… She wanted lace and I wanted rick rack… so I did what any good seamstress does… compromise… we came up with a school dress that has a lace collar (sort of…), that’s made with a partial plaid fabric with a bit of polka dots too!

This is the second set of sleeves that’s been in the dress. I first tried a tiny little puffed sleeve with a cuff and they just didn’t look right… I think I had the same problem with the last dress I did and had to use a different sleeve in it too. ( I think I’ll throw that pattern piece away…) Anyway, taking out tiny little stiches from tiny little sleeves…IN BLACK is no fun!

Okay, now I’m going to have to fess up to something that’s not correct on this dress…but it looks better the wrong way than the right way…
Looking at the back side, my buttons should be stitched on the back left side… I worked and worked trying to get the back to match up the correct way…

CIMG2486

Once it’s all stitched up and trimmed it’s too late to change it… but if I just flip the right over the left back side, it works fine… so I’m sorry it’s not absolutely correct, but it looks better this way…just this one time…

(If you hadn’t noticed…. Ten Ping is sporting a new wig…it’s called Doris and I think this little bob cut looks adorable on her.)

She’s also wearing her little glasses I made too… Don’t you think she looks pretty scholarly?

If you’d like to find out more about Ten Ping, made by Ruby Red Galleria, or get your very own doll, you can check out Lonestar Dolls (HERE) down in Texas. Dale helped me with my little Ten Ping and she’s delightful to work with…

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Hi Jeanne,
I love Ten Ping’s new wig. Can you tell me where you purchased it from. I would love for my little girl to have one similar.
    thank you,
    Karen

    1. HI Karen,
Thanks for commenting on Ten Ping’s new wig. It is a size 5/6 in Dark Brown called “Doris” and I got it off Ebay. The seller was jujus5gkids and she’s a great seller of doll wigs and shoes… I’ve bought many things from her in the past. I can’t put a link here but I think you can find it… just get the size 5/6 size to make sure it fits. They have other colors but I think Ten Ping needed the darkest brown one possible…

  2. Oh, how cute and studious Ten Ping looks! I thought for a minute that you cut her hair! So, Ten Ping just has a wig when you buy her? Those glasses are just adorable too!

Jeanne, I know what you mean, spending all the time in the world trying to figure out something or just do it right, and have not much to show for it! That’s me in a nutshell! But that dress is just adorable, and I really appreciate how much trouble it is to make such tiny outfits! Can’t wait to see it finished! That poor girl will need shoes too, before you send her off to school!!

    1. HI Linda,
Yes, Ten Ping has a removable wig and it’s nice to be able to change it if you want to. I was hoping the wig had more of a China Doll look, but the wig is a big puffy for that… I still like it though.
I hate it when I spend hours and hours and just have a measly little thing to show everyone, but sometimes that happens…
I made this little red and black dress and wouldn’t you know it, I don’t have any Real Red or black ultrasuede in the lots I’ve gotten… So we’ll have to see what I come up with…
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Very cute dress for Tin Ping…I’ve been sewing for my Kaye Wiggs doll…what a great size to sew for…Tin Ping is very cute and I love her plaid/polka dot dress!

    1. HI Suzanne,
Thanks so much for your compliments on Ten Ping’s little dress… I hope I can have a more productive day today of getting it finished…
I bet you are enjoying sewing for your Kaye Wiggs doll. They are a fun size to sew for…

  4. I also love her new wig. Ruby Red Galleria has a similar one in mohair but they want $40 for it and that seems like a lot for a tiny wig. Yes, she looks very scholarly in her glasses and the dress is perfect. Who cares which side overlaps in the back. I’ve always wondered which is the correct way, but I usually do as you did…whichever way looks better.

    1. HI Jevne,
I’ve seen that mohair wig on Ebay for the $40….the one with the two high braids? It’s sweet, but not that sweet for me…
Thanks for your nice comments on Ten Ping’s dress. I hope to get it finished today…but after yesterday, I’m not holding my breath…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Ten Ping looks lovely in the frock. Love the mix of plaid & dots. The Doris is a Monique wig. Monique has so many great styles. I’ve purchased shoes from juju5gkids in the past. Very fast delivery.

    1. Thanks Joy,
I think Ten Ping looks pretty cute too! Yes, I should have said the Doris wig was from Monique… thanks…
      Yes, juju5gkids is a great seller…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Ten Ping is adorable. Can’t wait to see the finished outfit.

I will be using your new trick for doing the back closing. I hate when things just don’t line up….So glad for you to share ideas…..Lynn

    1. HI Lynn,
Thanks so much for your sweet comments about Ten Ping’s new dress set. I am almost finished… and it’s even cuter than I expected… that’s always a good thing…
Even in mistakes I guess some things turn out for the best…

  7. Darling compromise dress.
Even though we are planning a trip to The PAoutlet mall doll store, in a group today, I read Hobby Lobby has different styles of boots and shoes for 18″dolls. I don’t know if they carried shoes in the past. I had to have Western boots since I have a small collection of boots just for fun. The pkg is titled Marigold Market Doll Shop. If we go in The store looking for an item, someone has posted about,a clerk always asks what state or part of the country the item was found, so we have these in N. Virginia. I plan to buy a doll when we go to PA. I had extra dresses for the MA 8″ dolls. I took the tops off and added needed length to the bodice with a ribbon. 8″ dolls are not a size doll I ever want to sew for. Too fiddly.

    1. HI Jan,
Thanks for your comments on Ten Ping’s dress. She is one of those little 8″ dolls so you might want to stay away from sewing for her… she is kind of fiddly, but I sort of enjoy it when I master it…
I have bought the boots at Hobby Lobby and they are pretty nice… I have a pair of slip on red glitter shoes on my cutting table right now. I thought I was going to use them for Eden’s dress set, but found the Mary Jane’s and used them instead.
I hope if you made it to the Outlet Mall Doll store, you had a fun day. It sounds like a fun outing…
      Blessings, Jeanne
