The Back to School Winner & an Update on the 1950’s American Girl Doll, Maryellen

Yesterday I asked you all to voice your opinions on which doll should be next in line for an all important outfit…a “Back to School Outfit!” It only comes along once a year, so it’s sort like a holiday, don’t you think? Between all the comments and emails it seems that the Dianna Effner 13″ Little Darlings are the winners. I will make my first Back to School outfit and show it on all three girls, since they all got votes. Then maybe we’ll vote to see “Who wore it best?” I think when they saw they were in the early lead, they got together and starting looking for fabrics that would look good on all three of them. This is what they came up with…

I’ll get started on it right away girls!

I didn’t get much response for the Ellowne dolls…one comment said they looked a bit “uncomfortable” and one that said the items people wanted for their Ellowyne’s tended to be the Tonner outfits or the High Fashion things. Kathie suggested maybe a Back to High School outfit…so I’m thinking they may be my first dolls to head to someone else’s house… I’ve got shoes and boots and patterns for them… Somehow I think I knew they needed to go.

In the meantime, Linda mentioned something yesterday about not knowing what the new Maryellen doll, by American Girl, was going to look like. She assumed she’d have a bob haircut as that was a popular style in the 50’s. Maryellen will be released on August 27th, but till then we all have to wait…or maybe not… I’ve done a little snooping and there is a picture of her that you can see. She is shown with long reddish blonde hair, similar to Mia’s, pulled back in what looks like a ponytail, and has sort of side swept bangs. Her face is turned a bit sideways so her eyes are anyone’s guess. It has been rumored that they’ll be dark green, or maybe brown or most likely hazel. I was hoping for blue myself.

Okay, enough said… You can see Maryellen by clicking HERE on Lissie and Lilly’s website. It’s a really clear picture and the only one out there! If you keep scrolling down the page, you’ll see the mini Maryellen doll too.

So, what do you think of her? Do you think you will be getting her? What color do you think her eyes will be?

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Well, Jeanne, don’t I have the red face!! I DID see those pictures on Playthings, and why did I say she would have a short bob? Maybe I wasn’t all awake! Anyway, I guess I won’t be getting her because at eight dolls and their bits and bobs, it just wouldn’t make any sense for me. However, I DO think that many of her clothes will go perfectly for my 40’s girls, even though the 50’s are the future for them. I will bend the rules for those kinds of things, and you can only get so much!

Love the plaid and can’t wait to see what you come up with!

    1. HI Linda,
I thought maybe you had seen her but just didn’t know it was the new doll… don’t be red-faced. I’m glad you said that…it gave me a way to introduce her to everyone.
I’m thinking I probably won’t be getting her either…(but never say never!)
She looked much cuter in the prototype with the Mamie bangs I thought… and her hair was a bit more red looking. I can easily use Eden for my 50’s girl.

I hope I can bring the “wow factor” to the plaid and make it really special…
      Blessings to you, Jeanne

  2. It looks like the little girls chose a really pretty plaid. Each one will look cute in a dress made out of it.
Mary Ellen is pretty and I love her hair color. Her dresses are darling, especially with the white gloves. The pastel colors of her dresses are so appropriate. Not sure about getting her since I already have several dolls that live in the Fabulous Fifties.
    Blessings!

    1. HI Paula,
Actually I’m making only one dress, but I’ll let them each try it on to model for me. Then we’ll vote to see who looks best in it…
Well, that makes probably 3 of us not getting Maryellen. I hope the ones that do get her, love her.
      Thanks Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

I am so impressed with your detective work. And someone/thing at AG is leaking like a sieve — unless this isn’t real thing — but it’s very convincing. I too liked the original, complete with Mamie bangs.

I went to your Etsy page the other day — I didn’t know you had skinny yarn scarves for AG dolls! They are so cute.

My earrings came, packed to withstand nuclear war. They are so much prettier and more sparkly than even your excellent photos. My sisters can’t wait to see them.

And, last but not least, that plaid is so pretty that your outfit is sure to be a winner. You may have to make three outfits. You can use the leftover bits to trim an outfit for the AGs.

    1. HI Marilyn,
I’ve been known to search the “entire” internet before…(when I was searching for a Wren doll, by Helen Kish.) I found 2… and bought them both… then sold one of them! I also searched for 2 years looking for a certain fabric, and I found it in California!

Maybe their picture isn’t the best shot of her. I’ve seen some pretty crummy pictures where it seemed like no thought was taken in account of how the dolls eyes were wonky or the wig wasn’t exactly perfect.

Yes, I do sell Skinny Scarves for dolls and Rebecca thought the other day that we should probably sell some for young girls… I had never thought of that before.

I’m happy your earrings arrived and that you like them!

I’ve got that dress all figured out in my mind… I hope it turns out like I think it will.
      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. The Little Darlings are going to look so cute in that plaid! Can’t wait to see what you come up with.
I went to the link you had for “Mary Ellen”…she’s really different and I absolutely love her clothes…they really hit the mark..the sleeveless shirt with “Pedal Pushers” as they were called in the 50’s is so right on. I wish I had a zillion dollars and my friend Maryellen would be getting her for Christmas!

    1. HI Kathie,
Oh wouldn’t that be a nice gift for your friend, Maryellen… a Maryellen doll. Does she collect dolls like you do?

Working on that Little Darling dress… I hope it’s worth first place in the voting!
      Blessings, Jeanne
