Almost a month ago I showed you some pictures of our garden the day we planted our plants. We’ve had a few ups and downs with the moles attacking the plants from the underneath side, the cowbirds from the top side and most recently the Cicada’s that have hatched and are everywhere! I thought I’d give you an update, as I’ve been too busy this week to get any sewing done. Preparing to go to my niece’s wedding is taking up most of my time, but I promise you when I get back in a few days, I’ll get back in my sewing room! (I’ve scheduled some posts for when I’m away, so you won’t even know I’m gone!)
If you click on the pictures, they will enlarge.
This was what our garden looked like on April 29th…
These pictures were taken today…
…and look real close… what do you see????
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Cicada’s are still around and are incredibly loud. The sound they make through the day is absolutely deafening when you are outside. It sounds like something from the Twilight Zone in our yard. We have lots of big trees and the more you have, I guess the more locusts you have making noise. My hubby had to come in and get some earphones to put over his ears the other day when he was mowing the grass. He said he could still hear their buzzing over the sound of the riding mower AND with the earphones on! That’s LOUD!
I was supposed to host a Bridal shower for a girl from Africa on June 17th. Now I’m not so sure it’s a good idea…we won’t be able to hear a thing each other says if they are still around then. I also learned today that the African girls are extremely afraid of bugs. Our yard is no place for wimps…so I may need to find some other place for it. They crawl up your back when you go outside, fly in your face and hitch a ride on your pants when you come inside. It’s just icky!
Here’s a close up picture of just one itty bitty branch on a big tree out my kitchen window…
Now multiply that by about 100,000!!!
As I was taking some pictures of the garden, I looked over at the chicken’s pen and noticed all the little holes in the ground, from the Cicada’s and thought, “You silly insects… don’t you know as soon as you come out of the ground, you’re going to meet your death?”
Our hens have been standing around in the pen, just waiting for one of these bugs to fly in. They sometimes jump 2 feet off the ground to catch one! Sometimes I see them shake their head…almost like a shudder… and so I’m guessing as that Cicada is going down, it’s pretty ticklish on their throats!
This morning Rebecca found an ad for some miniature Schnauzer/Terrier mix puppies on Craigslist. There were 4 male puppies and 1 female. The man sent me pictures and said we could see them this evening. My hubby hadn’t really said anything about getting another dog since his beloved Scruffy slipped away… but my daughter was trying to help and she thought this might be a nice Father’s Day present…with his approval, of course. When my hubby got home, I showed him the pictures and he said that wasn’t what he had in mind. I’ve realized that “we” (my daughter and I) can’t find the dog for him…it’s going to have to be him that finds it. It’s kind of like someone giving you a new dining room table… it might be nice and better than the one you had before, but it’s not the one YOU wanted… So, we’ll give him some room and let him find the puppy of his dreams whenever he is ready. I still thought I’d share these pictures of two of the little cuties…
Well, I think that’s enough hodge podge for today. I’ll see you when I get back..and hopefully I’ll do a little “commenting” if I get a chance…so don’t forget to comment even though I’ll be gone… I’ll still be watching!!! Thanks so much everyone!
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
Jeanne, your garden is doing great, from the pictures—tiny tomatoes already!! I don’t see any cicadas in it either! Yay for that!
Oh, how pretty that would be to have the shower outside in the gazebo! I had no idea you were still fighting off those cicadas! I forgot how long we had them, but gee, you would think they would be done by now!
Those puppies are just darling! Yes, I think George would rather pick out something himself. If it’s HIS dog, it’s best if he does the picking. Is he ready for another dog yet?
Have fun at the wedding and be sure to take pictures of the little flower girls in their “special” dresses you made!
Hi Linda,
Yes, for some strange reason, the Cicada’s are staying off the plants but they are like birds on a wire…all over the posts and wire grates… go figure…
I’m hoping the Cicada’s will be gone by then. We had a birthday luncheon one time for a friend and it was so nice. I put my white wicker settee out there and my neighbor brought hers over and it was a very nice setting.
I think he’s “getting” ready for a dog, but he was afraid to tell me. When we talked of it the other day, I realized he did want another one, but was just unsure if I wanted one. I want what makes him happy! He thought those dogs looked more like they had Australian Shepherd in them instead of Schnauzer… and so we wait. We did put in some inquires at a few kennels in the area…
I’m trying to get everything all together before tomorrow morning, when we leave. I’ve still got lots to do. How did I get so behind?
Thanks Linda, Hold down the fort while I’m gone!!!
Blessings, Jeanne
Again I say ICKK to those insects. Those puppies are cute, but I agree about being nice but not the one. Have fun at your neice’s wedding. 🙂
HI Christine,
Yes, there is only one word for those Cicadas! ICK!!!
I think he’ll know when the right dog comes along. He said it doesn’t even have to be a puppy, but one that captures his heart. He’ll know when it’s the right one!
I do plan on having fun at the wedding…
Thanks for your comments, Christine,
Blessings, Jeanne
Oh those bugs…yuk…so gross. I hope you don’t have them too much longer with the nicer weather. Glad the ” Ladies” (chickens) are putting an end to some of them as well as having a crunchy snack. Eww. LOL with a shudder!
Those puppies are adorable babies. I certainly understand that George will know when the time is right as well as which doggie he may choose. So, we know there is one out there waiting for George!
Have a good, safe trip to Pennsylvania tomorrow, Jeanne. I know you will relax a bit and enjoy family and the excitement of the wedding.
Take care dear. Blessings!
HI Paula,
I hope you are right and the Cicada’s are soon gone! I certainly won’t miss this…and glad they won’t be back like this for another 13 years!
I think there is a dog or puppy out there too and now we just have to find it! :o)
And yes, I do plan on having fun at the wedding. I’m looking forward to being with my brother and sisters all at the same time!
Thanks so much Paula,
Blessings, Jeanne
A tomato! It’s just now planting time for tomatoes here and I’ve noticed a couple June bugs on the screen the past couple nights so Spring must be finally here in northern Indiana.
I didn’t realize the cicadas hung around for so long. I thought they all came out of the ground about the same time and then in a week or two they would be gone. I feel so badly for you, Jeanne, it must be awful to even go outside.
A Schnauzer/terrier puppy is cute, but I’d prefer one that doesn’t grow into such a hyper dog. Perhaps that is what your DH has in mind.
Have a fun and safe trip to PA and please bring back photos of the little girls in the dresses you made.
HI Jevne,
Yes, we have tomatoes…that was just the one I could get a picture of without getting over the fence.
Those goofy Cicada’s are still here and they show no signs of leaving… It’s pretty bad when you can hear them through the windows of your house!
I’m not too fond of the terrier mix either…and I’m pretty sure he wants a Schnauzer “looking” dog, so it’s not likely we’ll get one like those. I don’t want a hyper dog either!
I’m off to finish packing and will definitely bring back some pics of those little girls.
Thanks so much Jevne,
Blessings, Jeanne
Great garden! Lots of work but the rewards when you get to eat the vegies! Living in Florida in a community we aren’t allowed to have a garden. ( the animals would eat it anyway.) We do get some great vegetables when we go for our yearly trip north to visit the kids. Middle of August. Our daughter lives in Massachusetts and has a huge one. We raid it just before we come back home. I take some tomatoes (green) and wrap them in newspaper. ,
In about two or three days to a week they will
be ready to eat.
Have a great time at the wedding! Looking forward to seeing the girls in the dresses.
HI Sylvia,
Yes, the rewards of a garden are wonderful! My hubby can’t seem to get enough of tomatoes! When we have more than we can eat, we take them to church and give them away! People flock to us like we have gold!
I’m planning to enjoy myself at the wedding! I can’t wait to see everyone! The trip there…not looking forward to it so much!
Blessings, Jeanne
The garden looks amazing..my tomatoes are about 1/3 that size. The Locusts do hurt your ears…I dread July 1 because it is then that they start screeching around here.
Have fun at the wedding…take lots of pictures! We not only wan tot see the Bride, Groom and flower girls but your family too!
Hugs,
HI Kathie,
I’ll do my best with the pictures…but it’s all up to my brother…he’s the photographer. I’m sure I’ll have something to show you all!
Blessings, Jeanne
