Yesterday my hubby and I went on an adventure…a 100 mile yard sale. Now let me clarify from the very start…we DID NOT go the whole way! It is non-stop house after house, community after community, church after church, that have booths and tents and blankets on the ground set up and are selling their goodies! There is SO much junk and treasures hidden among all of it, you really have to dig to find things.
My hubby was clearly the big winner! He loves to find tools and things he can use for plumbing and electrical projects, and boy did he hit the jackpot…and most of it for peanuts! That’s the best part when we get back in the car and he says something like, “Honey, do you know how much that wire would have cost me?” or “Wait till we go to Lowe’s the next time; I’ll show you just how much those electrical boxes are…” He was quite the happy camper! He unloaded all of his “treasures” in the garage to sort out or I would have shown you a picture of his stash!
My day was a bit more simple. I didn’t find any one treasure that I was ecstatic about, but still I got a few things I can use.
My glue gun was on it’s last leg. It was taking longer and longer to heat up, so when I spotted this one in like new condition for $2.50, cha-ching…my first nab!
Not sewing related, I found a book on Icebreakers. They call me the “Game Queen” at church, so I thought I needed this book. It’s filled will fun ideas for groups of people and great ideas to help them get to know each other or just have a fun time doing all kinds of activities. It will be a nice addition to help my brain out when it gets stuck!
This isn’t sewing related either, but I just liked it. It’s a little hand carved wooden boot. One side has been gnawed on a little bit, but I don’t care, I’ll set it on some books and it’ll make a nice conversation piece.
Three reels of grosgrain ribbon, brand new! They are 1/4″ wide and are very soft and flexible! I got green, red and purple. Each reel has a whopping 25 yards!
Ten Ping got a new little table. I plan to paint it white for her and soon she’ll have some tea cups to set on it! Sorry about the nudity! I took her dress off and she doesn’t have anything else to wear but her undies!
I found 2 more acrylic display pieces that work wonderful with patterns or trims wound on cards or even my fat quarters. I’m not sure which one I’ll use them for, but they are nice and it lets me see things at a glance instead of having to look behind a row of something.
One last little guy won my heart today. He’s a Boyd’s kitty and was in mint condition and just as cute as could be. I don’t know what I’ll do with him, but for now, he’s keeping my “girls” company on the dolly shelf!
So you might be thinking, “That’s ALL she got?” Yep, that’s it for this time. There didn’t seem to be as much stuff out this year, and many places were TOO high priced for me. I LOVE a bargain and will drive miles to find one!
We drove back to the town where it all started and found an Olive Garden and had a nice dinner…we were starving! On the way home we passed by the place where we went on our first date and my hubby told me he remembered what I was wearing that day… *sigh* ….it was worth the whole trip for me just to hear that! Love that guy…even though he got way more treasures than I did!
Have a wonderful Saturday!
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
It was so much fun to hear about your “treasure hunt”, Jeanne! Sometimes it’s not WHAT you found, but the fun in the finding! You had a lovely day with your hubby and great weather to boot! Has it ever been a rainy day on those 100 mile yard sales? That would be a nightmare!
So you and George lived there in Carbondale before you were even married? I often wonder where you grew up, since your father was in the service and you were born overseas, or lived overseas for awhile? You have a wonderful Saturday too, Jeanne!
HI Linda,
You are absolutely right about the “finding” of the treasure! For me, it was just getting away with my sweetie; just the two of us and looking for something fun to bring home. Some years it’s my turn and sometimes it’s his… it’s just fun to look at other people’s junk!
I have been in Carbondale since 6th grade and George grew up in a town about 20 miles south of here. We met at church. Our first date was a hiking day and I remember what he was wearing too!!! Silly memories!
Blessings to you Linda, on this gorgeous Saturday!

Oh my Jeanne, what really neat things you found at those yard sales! I thought you found a lot by my standards! It sounds like a fun day. I have never heard of yard sales that go from house to house and town to town!
Ten Ping has an adorable little table now! I am sure she’ll love that, especially when she has tea. The Boyd’s kitty is adorable. I thought about collecting them a long time ago. Thank goodness I didn’t with all the dolls I have. I have one Boyd’s bear dressed up in a Christmas outfit and she comes out during the holiday season.
How sweet and endearing to pass a place of remembrance like that with your husband on the way home. Those are the treasures of the heart.
Have a great Saturday, Jeanne!
Hi Paula,
Yes, the yard sale is organized and runs down one of the routes in Missouri. On Memorial Day weekend it goes from one point north. On Labor Day weekend they have another organized yard sale and it runs from one point and goes south. Sometimes we do both, sometimes not.
I’m not a big fan of stuffed animals, but he was just too cute to resist and SO soft. I may give him to some little girl at church, or just set him around on something…who knows.
It was a fun day, tiring, but fun! We LOVE to find new treasures!!
Thanks Paula,
You have a great Saturday too,
Blessings, Jeanne
Oh, what wonderful finds !! I love the hunt too. I told my husband about your husband’s great “stash” builders and he replied, “good man, good eye” !!
I especially like your old “gnawed” on boot. It is definitely a character piece. The three reels of ribbon will be so useful. They were a great find. I will be on the watch for when you use them in your sewing.
It is going to rain & rain this weekend here so I have several projects in mind involving my sewing room. Yesterday I hunkered down and finished three mending projects I have been put off…. too long. I also crisp ironed my favorite long sleeve cotton blouse. I tend to put that off as ironing is not my favorite task. Also, going to bake a pie – just because.
Hi Jeannie,
I’ll have to see if can’t get a picture of hubby’s stash so your hubby can really drool over his finds.
My brother in law carves out little shoes like this and my mom has one. I’ve always liked it. This one was just carved out by another brother in law, the guy told me…
We’ve had lots of rain, so it’s nice to see the sun shining out today.
I’ve got to get some posts written ahead of time for when I’ll be gone to the wedding and I’ve got to find a dress and get packed… EEK! I better get busy.
I’ll take a piece of pie!!!
Bye and blessings, Jeanne
I would say you got quite a treasure there, too, Jeanne, if he remembers what you wore on your first date together!!
