A few days ago I showed you my goodies from a shopping trip to JoAnn Fabrics. Some of my “treasures” were spools of ribbon that included tiny checks.
I LOVE using checked ribbons and fabrics to make a bit of a contrast with my doll dresses. I like the little tiny micro-checked fabrics for my doll clothes as the scale is better suited to their smaller bodies. It’s fun to decorate bodices or pockets with a touch of checks and I thought I would show you a few of my past creations. I have quite a few, so I’ll probably show them over 2 days. I’ll be working on something else to show you in the meantime.
Here are my two Bitty Bethany’s, by Helen Kish, wearing dresses with “fancied” up pockets…
Elin, my Iplehouse cutie, is wearing a dress that has tiny checked trim on the bodice, tied into bows.
Here’s Lian in that Easter dress you all liked do much. Just a simple band around the waist adds quite a bit on interest.
My blonde Bitty Bethany shows off the “checks” on her collar and the hem of her dress.
You saw this dress a few days ago, but here it is again up close so you can see the sash done in blue and white checks.
Lian wears her “checks” way down at the hemline on her sweet dress. (This was one of my all time favorites…very close to the top slot…)
Here’s another example of using checks as sash…it adds so much to the fabric, I think.
Bitty Bethany’s dress is just the opposite. It is made OUT of checks and then accented with the apron and collar. Doesn’t it look sweet on her?
Tiny little Snow White Riley shows off another strawberry dress with red and which checked ribbon used a little bit differently.
Sorry, but that’s all for today…
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
Jeanne, I too, love gingham checks! They make a wonderful contrast to the printed fabrics! Those tiny checks on the ribbon are just perfect for the dolls!
I hope you had a wonderful Easter with your family! It was a glorious spring day here with the grass greening and the flowering trees blooming! Happy Spring!
HI Linda,
I love using checks with my fabrics… they DO seem to add something special to the look of the dresses.
It was wonderful here too… we had a picnic after church and it couldn’t have been any nicer! I love days like that! Today it’s all dreary and rainy… what a difference a day makes.
Happy Spring to you too. I think I’ll put away my winter things this afternoon…and get out my Spring things…

Gingham checked fabric with eyelet lace accents are my long time favorites. I have an ample supply of both in my stash. Large checked down to the mini checked – it doesn’t matter. Now the eyelet lace has it’s own stash… I am just drawn to it. Anytime you show dresses etc. with these combos I am in love !!!!
Thinking of Easter and gingham….. back when my girls were pre-school I found blue & white gingham with little red hearts on it and made dresses for them. I added white eyelet lace pinafores over the top with red bows to accent. Red heart buttons on the back closure. They wore white tights and red patent shoes to complete the outfit. Cute-cute!
Hoping you had a wonderful Easter with family!!
Hi Jeannie,
I think all seamstresses are drawn to the checks mixed with fabrics.
I bet your dresses were darling… they sound so sweet. It was so much fun when little girls wore those kinds of dresses…not so much now… :o(
Blessings, Jeanne
You are right…The checked ribbon is the perfect accent to the darling prints in those dresses! I finished my LD swap and it is on it’s way today. I had much better luck with gathers using your suggestion of the 2 rows of gathering stitches too.
Have a good week!
HI Kathie,
I’m glad your gathers worked better using 2 rows of stitching… it does make it easier to get your gathers even.
I hope YOU have a good week as well.
Blessings, Jeanne
I look forward to reading your post every morning. You give us such great idea’s.
Thanks again for all of your hard work.
Have a great day.
Judi

I love the check contrast on the dresses too…I think the strawberry dresses are just too cute! I am ready to see more summer colors now..hint, hint!
Hi Regina,
I always liked sewing the strawberry fabrics too. They are so much fun to decorate! I’ve got more coming tomorrow, so hold on…
