Say Hello to Paco and Farewell to Scruffy….

Last week I did a post about a dog carrier I made for my little sewing friend, Sara’s birthday.(HERE) I gave it to her when she came over to my house to make cupcakes for her school birthday party, but unfortunately she left her favorite dog, Paco at home. Several of you made comments and I got a few emails about not seeing Paco. So without further ado… let me introduce Paco! Sara loves her carrier and so does Paco, along with Pearla Pink and her little deer friend, whom I have forgotten its Spanish name.

If you click on any of the pictures, they will enlarge.

Tomorrow is my hubby’s birthday and Sara’s dad has worked for weeks figuring out just what to cook to make him a special meal at their apartment! It was more than wonderful… a fantastic paella with shrimp and all kinds of marinated meats inside a risotto with shrimp and mussels on top! This man can seriously cook!! We started out with a soup that was yummy and ended with a boston cream cake! We were so full we had to go for a walk around the park 2 times before we ate the cake! I couldn’t resist snapping a few pictures. It looked like something out of a fancy magazine and it tasted out of this world! The cake has my hubby’s name on it and then the F.C. stands for Feliz Cumpleanos….(Happy Birthday in Spanish…) There wasn’t enough room to write it out, so he just put F.C. *smile*

While we were at their place, I wanted to take a few pictures of “Sara’s Sewing Station!” This is mostly just some odds and ends I gave her to help her get started, but look how organized she has it…

As wonderful as the lunch was, we had a lingering cloud of heartache over us, as our Schnauzer of 11 years, died this morning. Scruffy, aptly named as you’ll see in his pictures, was a dog who was not much in the eyes of anyone else, but to my husband, he was his best friend! Scruffy followed him everywhere and was uncontrollable with his “kisses” when my hubby got home each evening. He had some funny little quirks that only an owner could tolerate, but they were all overlooked by my hubby. It was sad to come home from the birthday celebration and not have him greet us at the door with barking. After eating his dinner, and while we were still at the table, he would always go into my husbands office and find a sock on the floor and come trotting into the living room with it in his mouth. He would then hop up on the couch and pretend he was burying it in the corner of the couch. He would keep doing that until my hubby got up and paid some attention to him. It was just some little ritual that he started doing and I guess he enjoyed it… I’ll miss that little trot of his past the dining room table… Most of the pictures we had of him were on the phones and not that great; but passed to each other as he was caught doing something “Scruffy Style” but I did find a few on my computer and thought I’d share these with you. I already miss you Scruff…

That’s a turtle he found crawling through our yard…

This is what my husband liked to do in the summertime… go lay out in the gazebo and love on his friend.

See you tomorrow,

Oh, my goodness. So sorry to hear about your precious Scruffy. I know how hard it is to loose a pet. Just takes your heart away. We send our thoughts and concerns as you all make adjustments to life without Scruffy at your side. He sounds like a wonderful doggy who was as loyal to his dad as his dad was to him. We will be thinking of your family during this time. So hard, I know.

    1. Thank you Jeannie,
After Rebecca and my hubby left this morning, the house seems so quiet. No Scruff to feed or walk. I see the smudges on the window where he used to look out and I almost don’t want to wipe them off…
      Thanks, Jeanne

  2. Jeanne, first of all, a very Happy Birthday to George! Wow, that meal that Sara’s dad made was really something to look at and I bet just as good to taste! Why isn’t he a chef?? I believe you mentioned that he did the cooking in their family—-I can tell! If my hubby cooked like that, I’d let him do it all too!

That little Sara is really something! I love the way all her “pets” fit in the carrier, it was just the perfect thing! And my goodness, what an organized little girl she is. Maybe sometime she could get a few of those plastic organizers you see everywhere to put her odds and ends in.

And Scruffy, what a precious little dog he was!! I too, know the heartache of losing a pet after having them awhile and becoming a part of the family. We are cat people here, and have lost two precious kitties. Our last one, Sophie, died a year ago, and I still have not gotten another because I hate the goodby’s so much! I love that picture of Scruffy playing in the yard, and has a bit of green moss on his nose! Looks like a St. Patrick’s Day card to me!
Oh, that picture of George with Scruffy—-so precious!

    1. Thank you Linda,
I’m going to plan a little birthday dinner for tonight and celebrate when he gets home.
Yes, Sara’s dad should and (could) be a chef. He really has a lot of talent…in the kitchen and out!
I’ve been watching to find her a little sewing basket but so far haven’t found what I was looking for.
The house seems so quiet today…no cover on the couch, no water bowl, no dog food on the top of the frig….just me and the silence. Yes, isn’t that picture of him with the turtle sweet. I might have that one blown up for my hubby!
      I think I need to sew…
Blessings to you and thanks, Jeanne

  3. Nice to see the pics of your husband’s birthday party and Sara’s sewing area. You can tell how proud she is of her space. What a special little girl she is!
So sorry to hear of the loss of little Scruffy. It looks like you have some funny and sweet memories of him. What a personality he had! The little guy will be missed a lot.
    Thinking of you both.

    1. HI Cindy,
Sara is proud of her sewing table. She told me when the kids were over at her apartment the other day to eat her cupcakes, one of the girls took her fabrics and was waving them around. She told me she had to fold them all up neatly again…

Yes, it’s going to be different without Scruff. He drove me crazy sometimes, but the house is too quiet right now to suit me…
      Thanks Cindy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Dear Jeanne,
So sad to hear about your precious Scruffy. I also know how sad it is and how much your heart breaks to lose a pet. I just don’t understand people I’ve known who don’t love animals. I couldn’t live without them. We’ve had two precious girl Yorkies and and Collie/Samoyed/ Shepherd mix who arrived on our driveway as a stray. She was the best and most wonderful dog ever! She’s been gone five long years now, but any little thing can still remind me of her and bring tears to my eyes. Each animal has such a distinct personality and little things totally unique to them. I was NEVER a cat person , but a pregnant cat arrived on our porch four winters ago and we feed her and found her and three of her four kittens homes. We kept the one little male and he has become such a special boy to me with his own special traits.
I firmly believe our animals go to heaven and that we’ll see them again some day.
May God bless and comfort you,
    Laura

    1. Hi Laura,
Thank you for your touching words about how animals are such a part of our families. My hubby is pretty much lost right now I think.
I’m sorry for your pet losses too… they really do become part of your family, don’t they?

I’m sure if Scruffy is in heaven, he’ll be watching and waiting for his best friend to get there. Thanks Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I really enjoyed your post today Jeanne. Sara looks like a sweet girl. I am so glad you can share your sewing with her. What treasured times for both of you. Thank you for sharing the story about Scruffy too. I lost my best friend (Bichon) Sophie recently. Your story about Scruffy really touched my heart. I am sending good thoughts and prayers to you and your hubby. I certainly hope and pray to see my beloved pets in heaven too. God bless, Kathleen

    1. Thank you Kathleen,
Yes, it’s fun being a mentor to little Sara. They should be here for 3-4 years, so I hope to teach her lots of sewing techniques before she goes back to Columbia.
I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your Sophie. Pets really do steal our hearts don’t they? Thank you for your kind words…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Yes, do have that picture of Scruffy and the turtle blown up…it’s just perfect and will be a happy memory for you and him! Sorry this will be a sad week for your family .
    ((HUGS))

  7. Hello Jeanne,

I am so sorry to hear about Scruffy. Our pets are so devoted to us, asking nothing of us, yet they return such affection and loyalty and they are so pure in honesty. The name “pet” seems so insignificant a word to call them. I hold dear to my heart, the ones that have passed through my life and considered myself blessed to have been their caretakers. When we lose them, the heartache is great but it heals in its own time, sometimes “never” and we admit that particular pet will and can never be replaced…

but when the time comes, it’s important to realize their are so many more “pets” waiting for their forever homes and if they are lucky… they could become another pet we will consider a blessing and one that has such precious characteristics as no other.
I am truly sorry you and your family have lost Scruffy… and I hope you find comfort in thinking about his little special ways.
    Blessings, Paula

    1. HI Paula,
What a very sweet note to us about losing Scruff. He was a character and he drove me nuts at times but I still would trade all those moments to have him back for my hubby’s sake. It’s very painful for him and I know, like you say, it will take time…
Thanks so much Paula. Your words were very comforting…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. I am sorry for the loss of your Scruffy..it makes me sad to think of how quiet your house must be without your little friend.
    hugs,
    Regina

    1. Hi Regina,
Yes, it’s very quiet in here. I had to go into the church to have a little surprise birthday celebration for my hubby this afternoon and when I got back home I opened the door and there was just silence. It was really strange not to have Scruffy meet me at the door…time…
      Thanks so much Regina,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Love the pictures of Sara and her sewing space and what an amazing meal! I’m so sorry about your little dog…..we consider ours members of the family. I know your husband will be lonely without his little friend; they are really such great companions. Blessings to all of you.

    1. Thanks so much for your kind words Carolyn,
Scruffy was definitely our “second son!”
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. Jeanne,

I so enjoyed all the pictures of the special day George was able to enjoy but so sorry to read about Scruffy. We do understand the sadness and hope that soon he’ll be able to only think of all the good times they had together. Please let him know we’d be happy to send him a rabbit. : ) They really do make good pets.

    1. HI Gloria,
Thanks so much for the offer of the rabbits, but I think we’ll pass. George is lost but I think he’s trying to stay busy to keep his mind off Scruff. It’s really hard for him.
thanks for thinking of him… He smiled when I told him about the rabbit offer…
      blessings, Jeanne

  11. Jeanne…I feel just absolutely horrible! I only just now read about Scruffy. I get so behind with email and sometimes end up with 3 or 4 of your blogs to read at the same time…which is the case today…and then I find I missed this sad news and am 3 or 4 days late sending condolences. There just isn’t any other kind of pain that’s exactly like losing a pet and there are just as few words to ease it. I am so incredibly sorry for both of you. I do know how hard this is and will be praying that God will heal your hearts quickly!! Sending love!
    Bobi
