A new bookshelf for my fabrics…

This morning my hubby and I had an appointment with “The Tax Guy.” :o( The day got better after we left! :o)
We stopped by a little Buy-Sell-Trade store and everything in it was terribly overpriced, except the one thing I wanted… this oak bookshelf. It was $65 and very nice! I could just see all my fabrics folded neatly in it and looking much nicer than the particle board one I have now. My hubby agreed with me that it was nice, so I bought it, but we weren’t in his truck and would have to come back later to pick it up.

We enjoyed the day together and went to lunch, then to Sam’s, then to another little antique shop and found a few more small things. Oh, I did find a French chair and will have to show it to you another time. I’m going to “redo” it! I need another project, don’t you think?

Anyway, back to the bookshelf. We drove home, got the truck and went back to get it…it was 17 miles away one way, so my hubby was quite the good sport about it all. It was terribly heavy and it took 2 men to get it on the truck. I was so excited all the way home! I just kept thinking of how I was going to arrange things in my sewing room. I love to streamline and find things that work better than what you are already using.

When we got home my hubby used his truck dolly and somehow managed to get it in my sewing room all by himself… the guy’s an ox!! I had to take all my dolls and fabric off the two bookshelves I already had in there and find some place to put them while he moved the new bookshelf in place. I’ve been working on it all evening but don’t have it quite done yet, and the other half of my sewing room that you don’t see is a d-i-s-a-s-t-e-r! But it’s after 11 p.m. and I have tomorrow to work on it. So… my post will have to be about my bookshelf, since I haven’t had any computer time to figure out anything else. I hope you like it.

These first 2 pictures are what it looked like with the 2 different bookshelves…It’s not bad… ( Those things on my dolls heads keep the dust off their hair… I know they look ridiculous but it’s what I use for now.) I should make them all Easter hats and that would work well.

…and this is my new bookshelf…isn’t it nice?

I have been working on folding my fabrics so they were 3 inches wide and some 6 inches wide. They just fit perfectly on my new shelves…
but I still have quite a few to go.

I have some other rearranging to do, moving a bookshelf to a different spot and fixing the shelves on the one bookshelf where I’ll move my dolls to. I’m going to put all my props on another shelf so it doesn’t look so junky. I think it’s going to be much better. I’ll keep you posted.

Anyway, that’s what happened with me today!

Thank you so much for all your comments about the loss of our Scruffy. My hubby is still just terribly lost without his best friend and we’ve both had a few moments today where we lost it. On the way home he wanted to hear what I had written about Scruff. I read it and then read your comments… I thought he was going to have to pull off the side of the road… So thank you for being so kind to him and sharing your hearts.

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Wow, Jeanne, that bookcase looks brand new—and heavy too! It makes a wonderful addition to your sewing room ! I don’t think you could buy a brand new one like that for just $68.00, since it looks so solid and the finish looks beautiful! Good buy!

I know, it takes awhile , if ever, to get used to missing a pet. I still, after a year and half, think of Sophie getting all excited when we came home from anywhere, because she would always greet us at the door. Yes, cats do that too! She loved to get into the paper bags from the grocery store and play hide and seek when I was putting groceries away, so I had to step carefully! I also had a lap partner in her, and now it’s just me.

I went to the AG store yesterday and saw the gazebo, which reminded me of yours! It is a darling piece, but I have no room.

    1. HI Linda,
I am still in shock that I found this oak beauty for $65.00. It was the only thing in the store that was worth anything and it had the best price on it too….almost like it was “meant to be mine!” I’m loving it and it looks so pretty in my room!

My hubby washed all of Scruffy’s toys and wanted to set them on the corner of the couch. Then he told me the last thing he washed was the cushion for Scruff’s bed. He said it was the last thing he had that smelled like him and almost couldn’t put it in the washing machine. Let me tell you we were both blithering sobbers after he said that! I know it will take time… longer for him…

I’ll have to take a look at the gazebo from AG. I haven’t seen it.
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. What a great deal! Your bookshelf reminds me of a three set unit that we use for our books. Each one is quite heavy by itself so yours must be super heavy!

Now you have more room so you can keep buying, right? And, you have much more fabric than I have so I had better catch up. LOL (BTW, I just ordered more on Friday.)

Scruffy is probably in heaven looking around down here for your perfect new friend so keep your hearts open…

    Have a great day, Jeanne!

    1. HI Cindy,
I can’t believe how good of a deal this was. It wasn’t like anything else in the store….I think it was saved just for me!!
      Absolutely keep buying…you AND me!

      Thanks for your sweet note…
      Blessings, Jeanne

Well, Jeanne I found out this morning that Jack does not think I am “weird”. He now sees that other seamstresses have a giant stash of fabric. He said, “I guess you aren’t the only one with a lot of fabric”. You saved me Jeanne !!!
I love your bookshelf. What a grand bargain! Perfect for stacking your folded fabric. Obviously you buy a set yardage so the fold are in exact sizes when folded. You will have to show us pictures of your sewing room when you finish rearranging.
Today is knitting with my “girls” and then a visit over at Hancock’s. It’s “senior day” so I will have to lay in some bargains. I also have my coupons ready so I am hopeful I will score some real finds. Then home to make some more tights and leggings. The spring colors are flying off my sewing machine.
Have a wonderful day organizing that room.

    1. Hi Jeannie,
If you need MORE help with you hubby… tell him this isn’t ALL my fabric… just what is showing at the moment!
I love my bookshelf too! It’s wonderful and just perfect for what I wanted. No, I don’t buy a set amount of fabric each time. It’s just when you roll it, it comes out the same width, but the lengths are all different lengths. I will show my room when I get it all finished…

I hope you have a fun day with the “girls” and buy some more fabric to add to your stash. Tell your hubby you need to keep up with Jeanne Marie!
      Thanks Jeannie,
      Blessings to you, Jeanne

  4. Jeanne that was a bargain for that beautiful shelf. I love how you have all your beautiful fabrics sorted so neatly. I love having things organized. So sorry to hear about your beloved pet Scruffy. Sounds like he had a wonderful life with you and hubby.
    God Bless
    Marsha

    1. HI Marsha,
Thanks for your kind note to me today! Yes, my shelf is wonderful and couldn’t be more perfect for what I was wanting it for. I love things organized too… now maybe this will help me get some more fabrics out where I can see them better.
Yes, Scruffy was a fun little pal… my hubby is terribly lost… He used to walk him around the yard every morning as he drank his coffee and then at night they would go out and close up the chickens! He’s done it for 11 years probably only missing 15 days at the very most… it’s hard for him.
      Thanks Marsha,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Jeanne, I LOVE your bookcase! What a find..it is a beauty for sure! Sweet hubby for getting it in the house for you, too.

I am so sorry about Scruffy..it is like loosing a piece of your heart. My beloved dog Deirdra died last month after having her for 17 years…I still look for her when I come home..sigh. It is hard. Extra hugs for both of you.

    1. Thank you Jane,
My bookshelf is wonderful and I wish I had a solid week to play in my sewing room to weed out and really get things organized, but I need to just things in place right now and do the details later. I’ve got to get back to sewing Easter Dresses!

I’m so sorry to hear about your loss of Deirdra after 17 years. That’s a really long time and I’m sure you know what we are feeling now. Yes, coming home without that familiar bark on the other side of the door is hard…really hard!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Hi Jeanne,
Your new bookshelf is lovely. You certainly do have a lot of fabric and it looks so neat and organized. So easy to find what you want.
Scuffy is in heaven with all the other loved dogs and cats. Pets really complete our lives and I can’t imagine a life without them. I had my Yorkie, Phoebe, who was my best friend as a child. I dressed her like a baby sister. She lived to be 17 and 1/2. My daughter even got to know her. I didn’t want another dog after her,but six months later we got Nellie and those two were both so loving and sweet, but with personalities very different from each other just like people. My daughter’s Yorkie ,Nellie, had to enjoy plowing a field while playing “Little House on the Prairie” and being dressed in doll clothes. Our Collie Mix
was named Mine ( as in pissessive- That dress is mine.) and she truly was. totally attached to us and so very gentle. There are so many animals that need a loving home so when you’re ready I do hope your husband and you can find another friend, not to replace because you can never do that, but to enrich your lives. I am so glad I didn’t close my heart to another animal because I would have missed so much love. “Pets are not our whole live, but they make our lives whole. =^-^=

    1. HI Laura,
I would need a bookshelf 4 times that big to hold ALL of my fabric, but it will do for now! I am really loving it and love the way it looks in my sewing room. I have my smaller doll prints on it but the larger fabrics are still in another cabinet.
Thank you for your kind words about the animals we all love. I’m sure you know the loss, especially in my hubby’s heart as you’ve been through it yourself.
Thanks so much for thinking of us..
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Love the new shelf! Fabriholics make the best friends…are you a quilter too? Looks like a quilter would LOVE those shelves as well. My fabrics are not as tidy but I did sort them all by color this winter and have them in some nice baskets from the dollar store on shelves my hubby put up in the Guest Room closet.

    1. HI Kathie,
Well, I’m not a quilter per se, but I have made several quilts in my lifetime… I love small prints for my dolls… and love to keep them organized by color too.
What would we do without those hubby’s of ours helping us with our sewing supplies???
      Thanks Kathie,
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. HI Jevne,
Yes, I think I got a very good deal! My hubby was proud of me for spotting it in the middle of all the other high priced stuff. I love a bargain!
Thanks so much…now to get it all filled up…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. So sorry to hear about Scruffy. My heart goes out to you both.

I love the new shelf. It looks wonderful with all the fabric on it. 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Christine,
Yes, it’s hard! It’s so strange to leave the house and not have to take him on a potty run before I leave…or not feed him a few scraps from the table…or not see the dog food on top of the frig, or see his water bowl or his leash or his bed or his toys all over the floor… I could go on and on…It’s just really different.

My new bookshelf is really wonderful. Today was a busy day and I didn’t get to play in my sewing room, but I’m hoping I have all day tomorrow to do it.
      Thanks so much, Blessings, Jeanne
