Someone asked me, “Do you ever run out of ideas for making doll clothes?”

Well, all I can say is, I’ve been sewing a L-O-N-G time and I haven’t run out of ideas yet…that’s not to say that I might run out tomorrow, but I doubt I will. There are so many fabrics and trims and laces and patterns, probably as many as all the stars… As long as I’m still able to sew, I’ll be coming up with new ideas.

This question got me to thinking and I remembered an assignment I had back in college. We had to take a plain garment ( I was very fortunate to have picked a little girls jumper) and come up with 15 different ways to make it. The basic garment wasn’t changed, just the designs and embellishments were. It really stretched us and I thought I’d show you what I came up with. Some of the designs are pretty timeless…considering this assignment was done in 1976…

I thought it might be fun for you to do a little assignment… pick a little girls jumper like mine and see how many different designs you can come up with…

Oh…remember this from yesterday’s post

  1. Ha ha. Your last two pics gave me a chuckle.
Wow! You came up with a LOT of ideas for one jumper style. I think my brain would’ve crashed after the first few. There are a lot of really cute ideas there. You’re right in that they are timeless.
    Have a great weekend, Jeanne!

    1. Hi Cindy,
Well, I did have to take out the armhole seam to get to the rip, but it wasn’t that hard… I whipstitched it up and he’ll never know…
      Thanks for looking Cindy,
YOU have a great weekend as well.
      Blessings, Jeanne

I love all those ideas! Just as Cindy said, I too would have imploded before I could have come up with enough ideas to make the instructor happy.
As to your husband’s jacket; I showed my dh the picture of the needed repair and he said he can sympathize with your man. He then reminded me of a pair of sweat pants he has that have an errant draw string lost in the casing. Soooo……… I’ll get on that right away.
oh, my dh likes that jacket with the nice plaid lining and added he would like one like that.
    I think you started something……………….

    1. Hi Jeannie,
O-K-A-Y… I’ll expect an update on the sweat pants drawstring….
We got that coat at a yard sale for $1.00! It’s been a great coat… except it was the one I had to replace the zipper in last year… I think I mentioned that in a post one time…telling my hubby “I think a new zipper equals a new doll…”
I hope you have a nice weekend,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Your different designs are really good and very creative. They are sweet little dresses.
Impressive repair on your hubby’s jacket sleeve. The notes to each other are clever and funny! One would never know there had been an opening on that sleeve. I like that philosophy, “a zipper equals a new doll.” My husband doesn’t quite understand my love for dolls and their accessories, however, he did build me a doll cabinet years ago and he put in the two large closets I asked for in my doll room.
    Have a great weekend, Jeanne!

    1. Hi Paula,
Ooooooo… a dolly cabinet and 2 dolly closets… that sounds like fun!!! I think my hubby is more interested than most because I can make extra $$ with them… He doesn’t get real involved with them, but he does look at my newest things and try to guess what time period it’s from or what the story line might be when I do my auction. He even sometimes comes up with story scenarios himself…
Once I did a patriotic dress with some bloomers underneath the dress. He wanted me to call it “Red, White and Blue-mers!” I don’t think I called it that but I mentioned it in my listing…
I hope you have a great weekend too, Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Jeanne,
All those different ideas for the jumper are really good! I too, remember having assignments like that and practically wore my poor brain out just trying to make up different designs. It’s good exercise though!
That one jumper with the Sunbonnet Sue pattern caught my eye right away. My mother-in-law made a quilt for my daughter’s bed, and I still have it, although it has faded a bit and is just stored away. It was so cute with all kinds of cheerful calico prints and went well with her yellow furniture. She had that on her bed all through the 70’s.

That jacket—you say cost $1.00? Goodness, what a bargain! Can’t let that one get away!

    1. Hi Linda,
Sun bonnet Sue was pretty popular, wasn’t she?
Yes, that coat was $1.00…that’s why I replaced the zipper in in last year… I HAD to!
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne
