My Sewing Room – Before and After….

I am VERY blessed and fortunate to have my own sewing room! It is definitely a work space; meaning it truly gets used and is one of the busiest rooms in my house…at least for me! It is generally organized, but right before Christmas, when I was super busy making yarn skinny scarves, doing tutorial’s for potholders, bagging and boxing up my Christmas treats, wrapping presents, digging through tubs for Christmas fabric, etc., it can become a little “cluttered” (understatement!) I’ve been wanting to share it with you for a while, but thought it was too messy for anyone to see. Then I decided since I managed to get it all cleaned up for my Christmas party, why not share some before and after shots. I think I took the before shots hoping to share it sometime and sorry to say, I think it might have been at its worst ever! It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty nice right now! I’m lovin’ it!

I guess I’ll show you the messy shots first…then you’ll appreciate the photos where it’s been cleaned up. It’s not that it’s dirty…it’s just cluttered…plus I was doing a little organizing at the time too.

( I don’t know if I want to say this or not, but if you click on the pictures you can see them enlarged…)

Now this next picture shows a man with his shirt off… crummy timing on my part in taking this photo. It’s actually an old Rita Hayworth movie I was watching…Just-wanted-to-clarify-that! :o)

Oh dear… maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. I’m feeling a little weird about you all seeing my room so messy!

You want to see more? Sure?

Alright, let me set the stage… It’s just off my living room and is a nice size room, having about 160 square feet. The room is actually square but it has shelves right in the middle that protrude out where our basement steps go down. So my room is sort of in the shape of a U. Okay, so let’s start the “tour!” Oh, one more thing… yes, the trim is missing around our ceiling, the window and the door… our house is a fixer upper and we haven’t gotten to that yet…

Remember the other day when I made my table skirt? I told you when you walked in my front door, the first thing you saw, if my sewing room door was open, was my cutting table…So here is that view…

CIMG5979

Then as you step into my sewing room, the floor is about 4 inches lower because it used to be a porch. On the left is a huge wooden cabinet packed with fabrics. My hubby made it for me out of 4 x 8 sheets of plywood and then stained it. One time his brother came over when he was working on it and asked if he was making a double coffin for us! Along the wall is that cabinet, bookshelves holding props, my mailing stuff and various other things.
My dolls are all standing on a bookshelf…YES… naked, of course! They have hats and things on their heads to keep dust off their hair. Fabric is rolled and organized by color on another bookshelf.

You’ve already seen this picture, but it’s where we are turning in the tour…

CIMG5983

Then the south wall in my sewing room is full of tubs and drawers and a dresser that have my doll shoes, wigs, accessories, mailing boxes, background boards, etc…

CIMG5990

Turn the corner again and you see this wall…with a bookshelf holding my books, albums of pattern pieces, and a few other things…

CIMG5991

This is where the shelving juts into the middle of the room. I have my trims, ribbons, buttons and odds and ends here. On the other side is where I have another bookcase and have the things I use most often at my fingertips when I turn around in my sewing chair. I get WONDERFUL sunlight coming through my south window and if I ever get to sew in the mornings it’s heavenly.

So now we’ve made it all the way around my sewing room and you can see into the Living Room again…

Well, I hope you enjoyed the home tour!

See you tomorrow,

I loved the tour even the messy one. I see that the key is to have an organizational plan as to storing all your items – even when it is hard to put them back in their proper place!
It is a dream to have such a lovely sunny window to shine down on your sewing. Sort of a Moment of God Light. I also love that it is open to the main parts of the house so you can be in working and still be part of the activity of the living room. I think it is grand.

    1. Thank you Jeannie,
I am so happy to have this room all to myself. When we first began looking for a home, I said at the very start I wanted a sewing room just off the living room so I could still be a part of all the goings-on with everyone else. And… I got just what I was hoping for.
Yes, the light in our house is wonderful, and it’s nice to do sewing projects early in the day and it helps to see all the little details…I think it’s pretty grande too!

  2. Love your sewing room! It is wonderful and you create such beautiful doll outfits! I check in every day to see what you are up to! Really enjoy it. Thanks!

    1. Thank you Jane,
I’m so glad you are having fun with me every day! I’m trying to get started for the new year and hopefully will have something to show real soon.
      Blessings and thank you Jane,

  3. Oh, I loved the “grand tour” Jeanne! I often wondered what kind of room you made all your lovely creations in! I love the sewing machine(s) in front of the window too. Did I count 3? I wish I had all that room, but never in a million years would I have all the materials and supplies you have! I also like the fact that you can be sewing and still not feel cut off from the rest of the household. Of course it helps, that you don’t have little ones running around anymore! What did you do when you did?

I’m looking forward to seeing what is the next project you have up your sleeves, so had better let you get to it!

    1. HI Linda,
My sewing room isn’t anything fancy or coordinated with certain colors or a style, but it works for me…very well in fact. I’ve sewn many a mile over fabrics in that room. I have 2 sewing machines, one serger and a blind hemmer. I used to do most of my sewing when the kids were napping or when they had gone to bed. I’ve always been a late night sewer…
I love that I can still participate in conversations with anyone in the living room too. It was just what I was dreaming of when we bought our house.
      I’ve got to get busy….
      See you tomorrow,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. How wonderful to see “thee VERY room” where you sew. So many wonderful things are created there! It is such a sunny pleasant place to work in too. I see Madame Jeanne Marie’s famous white boxes! It looks very organized and all the important things that you put together to make such beautiful outfits are at your fingertips. Thank you for the tour.
Enjoyed seeing the new Nutcrackers- very interesting ones. And enjoyed reading the comments from everyone.

    1. Hi Paula,
Thanks for “approving” of the tour! I was a little nervous about sharing it with everyone… it’s not fancy, but it works. It is a nice bright room and I love it. I’m anxious to get back to work on something for someone!
      thanks Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne
