I don’t know exactly why but I’ve been obsessing over Julie, the stick straight blonde headed doll, representing the 1970’s, from American Girl. I graduated in the mid 70’s so maybe that’s part of the reason I am obsessing… or maybe I just like her braid? Maybe I like her dark brown eyes? Who knows but whatever it is, I sometimes find myself looking on Ebay for extending periods of time, scouring over every listing of anything with “Julie” in the title. I haven’t put in a bid on any dolls yet, but it may be coming… In the meantime, I thought I’d show you some of my creations modeled by my “stand in” doll, Elizabeth. With her hair braided or in long pigtails, maybe she’s just as good as Julie… How many of you have Julie dolls out there? Do you love her? Is her hair hard to style? I do like to play with my dolls hair and some people have said hers is so stick straight it’s impossible to do anything with except that tiny braid down one side.
Instead of going on anymore about Julie, let’s get to some pictures I found in my archives of some 1970’s outfits that I made for Julie.
So, did Elizabeth pass the “Julie” test, or is Julie the only “real thing?”
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
Elizabeth is doing a fine job modeling the 70’s………while many of us were ironing our hair to make it straight, girls like Elizabeth look positively beautiful with a little bit of curl…..I have Kailey, who I use as Julie, and also as a great model for contemporary styles….
Thanks Kathy,
I am still obsessing over Julie, but maybe I should just quit!!!
Thanks for letting me know Elizabeth does just fine…
Blessings, Jeanne
Julie was my first doll. I was born in 1975. I haven’t tried to do anything with her hair except put a hairband on her. I can see it hard trying to do anything with it, but she is really cute. Your Elizabeth does a good job at modeling as a stand in for Julie. 🙂
Thanks Christine,
I’m on the fence with Julie… I think if I found one for a really good price, I might buy her, but from the emails I’ve gotten, it seems like Elizabeth does an okay job of modeling in everyone’s opinion.
Thanks so much,
Blessings, Jeanne
Hi Jeanne,
I actually won an Elizabeth last night on Ebay because I was obsessing over her and asked and learned on AGPT that she looks good in everything from Regency and Civil War to Kirsten’s, Kit’s and Samantha’s clothes. I wanted a doll to sew for that would be versatile. Samantha is my doll, but Kirsten and Kit belong to my daughter. I also wanted Elizabeth for my German made Felicity since I have her as well and I love the Colonial look so much. My daughter is getting Julie for Christmas because I was a child in the 1970’s and she is in love with her and her clothes. I do hear Elizabeth can do most any hairstyle while Julie’s hair is slicker and harder to work with. Elizabeth also apparently has the thickest wig of AG dolls.
Hi Laura,
Thanks for your thoughts on Julie. I’m still debating but when I hear someone say they have Julie and love her, it makes me want one too…
My Elizabeth has an incredibly thick and luscious wig… very fun to style.

Jeanne, those outfits are so cute and remind me of all the outfits I made for my daughter in the 70’s She was born in 1970, and I made lots and lots of things for her when she was little, and even matching outfits for me! I loved how easy it was to make all those A-line dresses and jumpers! And the bell-bottom slacks too! It really didn’t take much time to put together a cute outfit with a brightly colored patterned material and simple lines. Those were the days!
Forgot to mention that Elizabeth models the 70’s clothes just fine! After all, a lot of little girls had curly hair, even though it wasn’t the “style”! I do think Julie’s darker brown eyes make a big difference between her and Elizabeth.
Linda,
I like the thoughts of sewing the 70’s things again for Julie… or Elizabeth… I still haven’t decided. When I was in high school in the 70’s, that’s when I was probably sewing at my peak! I sewed on Friday nights instead of going out on dates! Yikes!
So do you think Julie’s brown eyes help sell her clothes, Linda? You mentioned in a post on the AGPT site that you were “seeing a different side of me” with me wanting a Julie, or something like that… do you remember that? What did that mean exactly? Just curious…

Hi Jeanne, I responded earlier, but I do not see my response here. Maybe it’s out there in internet world somewhere… Anyway, my daughter has Julie and says that her hair easily works into braids or a bun. Out of all the dolls we have Julie’s hair seems to be finer and silkier than the dolls with curls or waves in their hair. It is very pretty. Hope you had a nice Sunday.
Thanks Cindy,
I appreciate you telling me about how Julie’s hair is… I’ve been told it’s so slippery it’s hard to manage… I like to style my dolls hair so it was scaring me a bit to think it was that fine and silky… I still haven’t decided on her… since so many people told me Elizabeth looks just perfect as a stand in Julie.
I had a busy Sunday… my best friend came into town so I visited with her after church, then we went to lunch, then I had to hurry and help with a retirement dinner this evening. I just got home a little while ago. I’m trying to get 2 doll dresses for her to take back to 2 little girls in need of some dolly dresses… I’m not sure I’m going to make it by 2 tomorrow…but maybe…
Thanks,
Blessings, Jeanne
Jeanne,
What I meant about a “different side of you” is that I thought you were more into the old-fashioned, elegant outfits, and not too interested in the modern day ones, mostly because I only saw that in dresses that you made. Maybe that is what sells better?
HI Linda,
Oh… I think I do gravitate toward the more old fashioned looking doll dresses, so maybe I need to forget this Julie thing… everyone said Elizabeth was a great stand in and it’s not like I need to do tons of 70’s outfits… my heart truly is with the more historical line of dolls… maybe you just helped me make up my mind…maybe…
Thanks Linda,
Blessings, Jeanne
