When I was somewhere around 9 or 10 years old I LOVED making Barbie couches. I had saved 2 of my favorites for years and years and about a year ago I found them in a plastic tub. I looked at them and thought no one is ever going to appreciate these like I do, so I thought I finally threw them away. Then when I started this blog at the first of August, I was wishing I hadn’t thrown them away, because it was part of my past and I thought they would have made a neat post, showcasing my beginner sewing “techniques!” Well, lo and behold…. I was cleaning in my bedroom the other day and I opened this tub and there they were! I hadn’t thrown them away after all! Now don’t think I’m weird, but I almost started crying. Not that they are anything special, but I’m just sort of sentimental that way. It was a time in my life where I was just beginning to get my sewing wings to work.
For those interested in seeing “closeups” of these couches, (probably not) you can click on the pictures and they will enlarge.
These couches aren’t anything special…made from cereal boxes and stuffed with kleenex probably.
Here is an old Barbie doll of Rebecca’s sitting on one of the couches so you can see the size of them…
The bottom side of one couch even has a little drawing on it of something that looks like a table setting. I’m not sure if I drew it or one of my siblings… Perhaps those are cinnamon rolls being served or possibly eggs?
The stitching is pretty crude, but they are still MY couches… made when I was a little girl.
Notice the blindstitching around the round part…and the “buttons!”
I picked one up and… whoops… it sort of was just sitting together…
I even recently found a pattern with a couch on it and for some reason, I bought it. Who knows… maybe I should have been an upholsterer… NAH!!!
Okay, just one last shot… because I know you are just loving them! (ha!)
Thanks for letting me share them with you!
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
I’m impressed at how young you were when you made these. Those little rolled arms with the contrast fabric are an extra cute touch. You got the scale perfectly too. I’m glad you saved these…really fun to see. Have a great weekend, Jeanne!
HI Cindy,
YAY…somebody liked them besides me! I’m really glad I saved them too!

Jeanne, I sure enjoy seeing these things you have made as a little girl – and these couches show real skills as such a young age – there was a lot of figuring to do on these. Again, I find your early stitches very poignant. I am guessing that these were made of the ever popular (back then, not now!) 1970s polyester double knit!? The prints sure give the decade away 🙂
Tomi Jane
Hi Tomi Jane,
Thanks for commenting on my couches… did you make these when you were little too? I’m glad I didn’t throw them away after all.
The one couch with “buttons” is a soft cotton knit but the aqua “decorator’s” touches were in double knit. The other one, the green and gold one, is actually a cotton print.
Thanks for taking a look, Tomi Jane…. I hope it brought a smile to your face this morning.
Blessings, Jeanne
